XYL-PRO

Complete testing kit for measuring workplace air quality and occupational exposure to xylenes (o-xylene CAS 108-38-3, m-xylene CAS 95-47-6, p-xylene CAS 106-42-3). Exposure to xylenes can cause occupational diseases.

Occupational Exposure: Standard
  • Standard
  • Homogeneous Exposure Group

Xylenes are aromatic hydrocarbons primarily used as chemical intermediates and industrial solvents; they exist in the form of three isomers: o-xylene (CAS 108-38-3), m-xylene (CAS 95-47-6), and p-xylene (CAS 106-42-3). They are present in many occupational settings, particularly those exposed to solvent vapors and petrochemicals. These compounds are commonly used as solvents in paints, varnishes, adhesives, and fuels. Although they are less toxic than benzene, they can cause harmful effects on the central nervous system and irritation of the respiratory tract.

Regular monitoring of occupational exposure to xylene is a regulatory requirement and essential for protecting workers’ health and preventing occupational diseases.

What is included in the Scan4Work Xylene Test Kit?

  • A Scan4Air VOC sampler
  • Instructions for use
  • A sample collection form to be completed and returned with your sample
  • Laboratory analysis of the sample
  • Analysis report sent by email to the address provided on the sample collection form

Shipping costs (both delivery and returns within mainland France) are included.

What are the main industrial uses of xylenes?

Xylenes are commonly found in consumer products and are among the most widely used chemicals in the chemical and petrochemical industries, particularly as:

  • Solvents in paints, inks, varnishes, and cleaning products
  • Fuel components (gasoline, industrial solvents)
  • Raw materials for plastic manufacturing (terephthalate, phthalic anhydride)
  • Used in the petrochemical industry and in the manufacture of rubber and resins

What are the occupational exposure limits (OELs) that employers must comply with?

According to OSHA and the current regulations in France, the OELs for xylene (8 hours TLV-TWA, Threshold Limit Value − Time-Weighted Average) are presented below for each xylene isomer.

  • m-Xylene (No. CAS 108-38-3): OEL 8h 50 ppm equivalent to 221 mg/m³ (8 hours TLV-TWA, Threshold Limit Value − Time-Weighted Average) and OEL 15 minutes 100 ppm equivalent to 442 mg/m³
  • o-Xylene (No. CAS 95-47-6): OEL 8h 50 ppm equivalent to 221 mg/m³ (8 hours TLV-TWA, Threshold Limit Value − Time-Weighted Average) and OEL 15 minutes 100 ppm equivalent to 442 mg/m³
  • p-Xylene (No. CAS 106-42-3): OEL 8h 50 ppm equivalent to 221 mg/m³ (8 hours TLV-TWA, Threshold Limit Value − Time-Weighted Average) and OEL 15 minutes 100 ppm equivalent to 442 mg/m³

The occupational exposure limits (OELs) for xylenes are mandatory, meaning that workers’ exposure must not exceed these limits.

How is your air sample collected and analyzed?

  • Sampling: This is performed using a Scan4Air VOC sampler containing activated carbon, specifically designed for occupational exposure sampling.
    • For workplace air quality measurements, it is placed in the work environment for a period of 8 hours
    • For occupational exposure measurement, it is attached with the provided clip to the operator’s collar for 8 hours.
  • Analysis: After extracting the activated carbon with a solvent, the extract is analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) for reliable and accurate detection.
  • Turnaround time: Your analysis results are available within 15 business days.
  • Report: Your analysis results are sent via email in the form of a detailed report in English.

Homogeneous Exposure Group (HEG)

The regulatory assessment of occupational exposure requires the simultaneous measurement of exposure for three workers (Homogeneous Exposure Group) and the measurement of ambient air at the workplace. The GHE version of this kit includes all the equipment needed to perform these four measurements.

This kit allows you to easily, quickly, and reliably measure workplace air quality or occupational exposure to ensure compliance with regulations and workplace safety.
